The brown lobate structures visible underwater are accumulations of "pillow lava", a common feature of sub-aqueous extrusion of basaltic lavas. The colour of the ocean is due to suspended volcanic glass fragments and thermophilic zooplankton (water temperature at point of entry is about 70 °C).
